Why rockets are launched from the equator

Most space rockets are launched from the equator. Why is this?

Of course it is because the earth is rotating, so if you launch in the same direction as the spin you have a speed advantage on launch. This demo exaggerates this effect using toy spring rockets. It was built for the 2015-16 christmas lectures (23:00).
